  1. INSTALLING YOUR HP DESKJET 500 SCALABLE PRINTER DRIVER FOR
  2. MICROSOFT« WINDOWS 3.0

  5. The HP DeskJet 500 Scalable Printer Driver for Microsoft«
  6. Windows 3.0 offers several features that enhance your
  7. printer's capability to produce quality documents:
  8.  
  9.      *    the ability to scale printer fonts from 4 to 127
  10.           point
  11.  
  12.      *    support for text and graphics in portrait and
  13.           landscape orientation
  14.  
  15.      *    matching screen and printer fonts for true WYSIWYG
  16.           (What You See Is What You Get)
  17.  
  18. This driver includes three scalable typefaces from the HP
  19. MasterType Library: CG Times, Courier, and Univers. It can
  20. also be used with additional MasterType Library scalable
  21. typefaces.

  23. The HP DeskJet 500 Scalable Printer Driver for Microsoft«
  24. Windows 3.0 supports both the HP DeskJet 500 and HP DeskJet
  25. PLUS printers. This printer driver is also completely
  26. compatible with the HP DeskJet printer, but the print speed
  27. will be slower.

  29. To use your HP DeskJet 500 Scalable Printer Driver for
  30. Microsoft« Windows 3.0, you will need to perform these tasks
  31. through the Windows 3.0 Control Panel:
  32.  
  33.      *    install the driver and its support files on your
  34.           hard disk
  35.      *    select printer settings
  36.      *    install printer fonts
  37.      *    create screen fonts (optional)
  38.      *    activate your printer
  39.

  52. INSTALLING THE DRIVER AND ITS SUPPORT FILES ON YOUR HARD
  53. DISK
  54. =========================================================

  56. 1.   Start Windows 3.0.
  57.  
  58. 2.   Double click the Control Panel icon in the Main group
  59.      window.
  60.  
  61.      The Control Panel window will appear.
  62.  
  63. 3.   Double click the Printers icon.
  64.  
  65.      The Printers dialog box will appear.
  66.  
  67. 4.   Click the Add Printer button, then scroll through the
  68.      printers in the List of Printers box until Unlisted
  69.      Printer appears.
  70.  
  71.      If you have no other printers installed on your system,
  72.      scroll through the List of Printers box until Unlisted
  73.      Printer appears. Unlisted Printer is at the end of the
  74.      list.

  76. 5.   Double click Unlisted Printer.
  77.  
  78.      The Add Unlisted Printer dialog box will appear.
  79.  
  80. 6.   Insert the HP DeskJet 500 Scalable Printer Driver disk
  81.      into your computer's flexible disk drive.
  82.  
  83. 7.   Double click your computer's flexible disk drive
  84.      ([-a-], for example) in the Directories list box on the
  85.      right.
  86.  
  87. 8.   Double click dj500.drv in the Driver Files list box on
  88.      the left.
  89.  
  90.      If you have other printers installed on your system,
  91.      "HP DeskJet 500 Scalable on None, Inactive" will appear
  92.      as selected (highlighted) in the Installed Printers
  93.      list box.
  94.      
  95.      If you have no other printers installed on your system,
  96.      "HP DeskJet 500 Scalable on . . ., Active" will appear.
  97.  
  98. 9.   Click OK to close the Printers dialog box.
  99.  
  100. 10.  IMPORTANT! Close the Control Panel, returning to the
  101.      Main Group window.
  102.  
  103. At this point, the driver and its accompanying support files
  104. have been installed on your system. Continue with Selecting
  105. Printer Settings, below.

  109. SELECTING PRINTER SETTINGS
  110. ==========================
  111.  
  112. 1.   Double click the Control Panel icon in the Main Group
  113.      window.
  114.  
  115.      The Control Panel window will appear.
  116.  
  117. 2.   Double click the Printers icon.
  118.  
  119.      The Printers dialog box will appear.
  120.  
  121. 3.   Click HP DeskJet 500 Scalable on None, Inactive, or HP
  122.      DeskJet 500 Scalable on . . ., Active.
  123.  
  124. 4.   Click the Configure button.
  125.  
  126.      The Printers - Configure dialog box will appear.
  127.  
  128. 5.   Click LPT1 or COM1 in the Ports list box on the left to
  129.      select the port to which you connected your printer
  130.      when you set it up.
  131.  
  132.      LPT ports are parallel ports. COM ports are serial
  133.      ports. If no other printers are installed on your
  134.      system, you will probably want to select LPT1.
  135.  
  136. 6.   Click the Setup button.
  137.  
  138.      The HP DeskJet 500 Scalable on . . . dialog box will
  139.      appear.
  140.  
  141. 7.   Select your printer (DeskJet 500, DeskJet PLUS, or
  142.      DeskJet), and the paper size, resolution, and
  143.      orientation, as desired.
  144.  
  145.      Click down arrow on the drop down list box for a list
  146.      of the options for each setting. Click the Help button
  147.      for more information on selecting printer settings.
  148.  
  149. Once you have selected your printer settings, continue with
  150. Installing Printer Fonts, below.

  154. INSTALLING PRINTER FONTS
  155. ========================
  156.  
  157. 1.   Click the Printer Fonts button.
  158.  
  159. 2.   Specify the directory in which to store your driver's
  160.      configuration files and font files, either by using the
  161.      default directory (C:\TD\TYPE), or by typing an
  162.      alternative drive/directory.
  163.  
  164. 3.   Click OK.
  165.  
  166. 4.   Click OK to confirm the drive/directory in which to
  167.      store your driver's configuration files and font files.
  168.  
  169. 5.   Click the Install Fonts button.
  170.  
  171.      The Install Fonts: Source Directory dialog box will
  172.      appear.
  173.  
  174. 6.   If you are using a 3.5 in. flexible disk drive, insert
  175.      the HP DeskJet 500 Scalable Fonts disk into your
  176.      computer's flexible disk drive and type the name of
  177.      that drive in the Install Fonts: Source Directory
  178.      dialog box.
  179.  
  180.      If you are using a 5.25 in. flexible disk drive, the
  181.      printer fonts are contained on the HP DeskJet 500
  182.      Scalable Printer Driver disk already in the flexible
  183.      disk drive.
  184.  
  185. 7.   Click OK.

  187.      The Install Fonts: Destination Directory dialog box
  188.      will appear.
  189.  
  190. 8.   Specify the directory in which to store fonts either by
  191.      using the default directory (for example, C:\TD\TYPE),
  192.      or by typing an alternative drive/directory in which to
  193.      store your fonts.
  194.  
  195. 9.   Click OK.
  196.  
  197.      The CG Times, Courier, and Univers printer fonts will
  198.      appear in the Printer Fonts From: list box on the left.
  199.  
  200. 10.  Select the fonts you wish to install from the Printer
  201.      Fonts From: list box on the left.
  202.  
  203.      You may select all or some of the source fonts by
  204.      pressing and holding the Ctrl key while clicking on the
  205.      name of each font you wish to install.
  206.  
  207. 11.  Click the >>Copy>> button.
  208.  
  209.      For first time installation, this process may take
  210.      several minutes. When this is complete, the list of
  211.      fonts you just installed will appear in the Installed
  212.      Printer Fonts list box on the right.
  213.  
  214. 12.  Click OK to close the Install Printer Fonts dialog box.
  215.  
  216. At this point, you may wish to create screen fonts for the
  217. printer fonts you just installed. If so, continue with
  218. Creating Screen Fonts, below. Otherwise, continue with
  219. Activating Your Printer in the next section.

  223. CREATING SCREEN FONTS
  224. =====================
  225.  
  226. Creating screen fonts allows you to see fonts on your screen
  227. that match the fonts on your documents for true WYSIWYG
  228. (What You See Is What You Get). You create these bitmap
  229. screen fonts from the scalable printer fonts you installed.
  230. Creating screen fonts is optional; you will be able to use
  231. the scalable printer fonts whether screen fonts exist or
  232. not.

  234. 1.   Click the Screen Fonts button.
  235.  
  236. 2.   Select the printer fonts for which you wish to make
  237.      screen fonts from the Installed Printer Font(s) list
  238.      box on the left.
  239.  
  240.      You may select more than one printer font by pressing
  241.      and holding the Ctrl key while clicking each the name
  242.      of each printer font for which you wish to create
  243.      screen fonts.
  244.  
  245. 3.   Click the >>Create>> button.
  246.  
  247.      The screen fonts will be created in the following
  248.      standard point sizes: 8, 10, 12, 14, 18, and 24. You
  249.      may add or delete sizes for a screen font by selecting
  250.      the font from the Installed Screen Font(s) list box and
  251.      clicking the Edit Sizes button. Click the Help button
  252.      for more information on editing screen fonts.

  254. 4.   Click OK to close the Create Screen Fonts dialog box.

  258. ACTIVATING YOUR PRINTER
  259. =======================
  260.  
  261. Before you may use your printer, you must activate it.
  262.  
  263. 1.   Click OK to close the HP DeskJet 500 Scalable on . . .
  264.      dialog box.
  265.  
  266. 2.   Click OK to close the Printers  Configure dialog box.
  267.  
  268. 3.   Click Active in the Status box in the Printers dialog
  269.      box.
  270.  
  271. 4.   Double click HP DeskJet 500 Scalable on . . . to make
  272.      it your default printer.
  273.  
  274. 5.   Click OK to close the Printers dialog box.
  275.  
  276. 6.   Close the Control Panel, returning to the Main group
  277.      window.
  278.  
  279. 7.   Remove the disk from your flexible disk drive and store
  280.      it in a safe place.

  282. Your HP DeskJet 500 Scalable Printer Driver for Microsoft«
  283. Windows 3.0 is now installed and set up for use. Additional
  284. information on using the HP DeskJet 500 Scalable Printer
  285. Driver can be found by clicking the Help buttons in the
  286. printer setup dialog boxes. Also, check your disk(s) for
  287. README.TXT files. These files contain late-breaking
  288. information and may be read using the Windows 3.0 Notepad
  289. accessory.

  293. PROBLEM SOLVING
  294. ===============
  295.  
  296. If you have problems during or after the installation of the
  297. HP DeskJet 500 Scalable Printer Driver for Microsoft« Windows
  298. 3.0, close the Control Panel and remove the disk from your
  299. flexible disk drive. Open the Control Panel, reinsert the
  300. disk, and continue from where you left off.
